Southern California is currently being swarmed by insects because of the above average rainfall this year. The wet weather earlier this year, which is still continuing here and there, followed by warm weather that has occurred in between the pockets of rain have created the ideal conditions for two insects in particular. Crane flies and fungus gnats are increasingly being reported and are being mistaken for mosquitoes and fruit flies. Levy Sun, the public information officer for the Greater L.A. County Vector Control District, stated:

A lot of residents in L.A. who are not used to seeing lots of insects are seeing them now… They’re getting frustrated and maybe a little freaked out seeing so many insects around their home.

Thankfully both insects are relatively harmless to humans, but the incoming summer weather will surely bring in a large swarm of mosquitoes, which are harmful to humans.
