The Casa 0101 Theater in Boyle Heights, which opened 15 years ago, is in danger of closing. The theater has announced that it’s in danger of closing because it can no longer afford to pay the rent, which has gone up in small increments each year. The theater has held over 100 plays, countless art shows and free to low-cost classes on acting to filmmaking. Emmanuel Deleage, who is Casa 0101’s executive director, stated,
We have over 10,000 people come through our doors so it shouldn’t be impossible. We just need to get the word out about our 350 campaign. People need to believe they can make a difference.
Deleage is the husband of the founding artistic director, Josefina López, of Casa 0101 Theater. López is best known as the creator of “Real Women Have Curves,” which was adapted into a breakout film that starred America Ferrera and Lupe Ontiveros. The theater’s team hopes to resolve the theater’s financial dilemma with an emergency fundraising campaign. Their goal is to get 350 people to become $25-monthly donors by June. There are 93 people so far that have committed to help Casa 0101 meet its $105,000 annual goal. Hopefully the theater is able to remain open so that it can continue to provide the community with cultural activities.
